A Timeline with TimeToast
Learning objectives of the activity
- To make a timeline.
- To motivate the pupils to learn about Anglosaxon festivities.
- To have a better understanding of British and American cultures.
- To improve the children's skills, specially reading and speaking.
Advantages of using TimeToast
- This is a very attractive and useful tool. While some children are presenting their jobs, the rest can follow them thanks to the images. The visual support is essential for young learners.
- By means of this activity, the pupils can easily see the sequence and dates of the different festivities.
Steps to follow
- First of all we thought about different topics. We discussed about each of them and eventually we decided to create a timeline about festivities, considering that this theme is really motivating for them.
- Later on, they decided which festivities they preferred to work on.
- We searched for information on the Internet. The pupils wrote down the exact dates and they also looked for the images they liked the most in order to do their timelines.
- The pupils made a summary with all the data they needed to write on their jobs.
Problems
- The only problem was that some pupils do not have computers at home. That situation was solved by lending them my personal computer together with another one that I have at school. In groups of three, these children could do and enjoy their projects.
The students' reaction
- Once the jobs were finished, my pupils felt very proud and they wanted to present them in the front. It is a new tool for us and everybody is willing to do it again.
Things to change or improve
- Regarding future jobs, I would give more time and freedom for pupils to carry out their projects.
Three ways TimeToast helped me
- To improve the pupils' reading skills.
- To help the children to summarize information.
- To guide the students to organize the dates.
- To make data easier for pupils thanks to the visual support.
In conclusion, the use of TimeToast has been very rewarding and motivating for all of us.
