Edpuzzle

Watching videos in English is one of my favourite tools for my students to improve their level of English. Therefore, Edpuzzle is an essential technique to work with videos in the best possible way.

We use it very often, since I have realized it is very motivating for my pupils.

In this case, we are comparing English schools with the Spanish ones. Our current unit is about subjects, thus this video is perfect in order to work on this topic.

Why did I use this video?

I think it is a very interesting approach for introducing the topic. This way, they can see children like them working at school and studying the same subjects they have in their own school. I believe this tool makes pupils willing to learn. It is really significant to have images at the same time they listen to real children talking to each other at school. For me, it is very appealing to work with authentic material.

What were the learning objectives and the sequence of activities?

- To watch an authentic video in order to compare British and Spanish schools.

- To learn subjects in English.

- To contrast British and Spanish culture.

- To discuss advantages and disadvantages of both kinds of school just as the different cultures.

  • Home activities
    • Watch the video and answer the questions.

    • Write down anything to talk about in the class.

  • Class activities

    • Speak about the subjects in English.
    • Questions about anything which drew their attention.
    • To watch the video again.

Did I flip the classroom?

I flipped the classroom, since I thought it would be attractive for them to watch the video at home. Likewise they would have more information in order to participate in class.

I believe it is a good way of achieving my learning objectives.

Did the experience go well?

The experience went really well and my pupils are eager to do it again. They had lots of questions and remarks about the video. For example, I told them about the lollipop lady, something which we do not have here and they concluded it would be very useful for us.

Would I change something?

One problem is that some children do not have a computer at home. So, I have to lend them my personal laptop at school. This way, at least they can watch the video once before we watch it together.

To summerize, Edpuzzle is a useful and motivating technique for students and teachers too.
